Alexander Semyonov

The artistic leader of “The Optina Pustin” male choir Alexander Semyonov was born in 1975 in St Petersburg. Since 1982 to 1993 he was studding in the M.Glinka musical College. He continued his education in the St Petersburg N.Rimsky-Korsakov conservatory, which he graduated as a choir conductor (class of V.Borisov); also he graduated as a symphonic conductor (class of E.Serov). Since 1998 to 2000 he was researching the ancient Russian unlined style of musical notation under the guidance of Z.Guseynova and A.Kruchinina.

During his studding period A.Semyonov founded the professional male Church choir on the base of the Optina Pustyn monastery department in St Petersburg. Its main task is a revival of the ancient Russian singing tradition, its most prominent masterpieces. Each new song included in the Church Services and the concert programs are carefully prepared by the work with the originals and cooperation with the leading experts, who decipher the ancient manuscripts.

Alexander Semyonov is an author of the Church and secular musical works. He is an editor of the Full Lenten Triodin for a male choir, which is supposed to be published soon.
